Stel E. Duncan brings wonderful spiritual balance as well as professional talent to her position as the Director of Research for ADVANTAGE RANCH. With Doctorates in Counseling Education and Educational Research and Evaluation, and a Masters in Recreational Therapy, Dr. Duncan has a unique academic preparation for this role. On the personal front she has a deep love for horses and a thorough appreciation of their value as a therapy tool, together with empathy and understanding of the many life challenges that children face.

In her present position as the Director of the Waldron Center for Applied Health Research, Dr. Duncan serves as an able administrator with wide experience in grantsmanship. Over the past three years she has been awarded over $ 1.5 million in federal, state, and local funding. In her previous position as a practicing therapist she worked extensively with children having multiple disabilities and developmental delays. Mother of four children, Dr. Duncan sees child development from the perspective of both a parent and an academician.

With this background Dr. Duncan has made many contributions to ADVANTAGE RANCH. She spearheads the work in establishing credibility for Equine Interactive Counseling™ through the use of evaluability assessments, standardizing of measurement tools, and tracking impact information. Duncan’s work stands on the forefront of demonstrating measurable and predictable outcomes for therapeutic riding programs in the United States. Dr. Duncan has made more than 50 presentations in her areas of interest, and is always happy to share her knowledge with, and learn from, her colleagues. Author of many articles in the field, she has been published in Psychological Review, ERIC, and the Journal for Exceptional Children. She co-authors the Technicians Handbook for Equine Interactive Counseling™ and has recently been invited to provide a chapter for the Manual on Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy, Leslie  Moreau, editor.
